VoIP Calls With Wi-Fi Networks

February 02, 2007VoIP Calls With Wi-Fi Networks

– Pushpa Sathish, Staff Writer

You would think that an increase in the number of mesh Wi-Fi access points (AP) is something to cheer about! It is, but not for the quality of voice calls made using VoIP technology and carried over Wi-Fi networks. Robert Poe explains why at VoIP News:

But the technology has inherent disadvantages when it comes to carrying voice. The more wireless “hops” a call has

to traverse, the more likely it is to suffer increased latency, especially when the network gets busy and the spectrum crowded. The result can be voice quality problems involving factors such as cadence, echo and jitter.

Not all is lost, however. Wi-Fi operators can save the day if they build their mesh networks keeping in mind that they will be used to carry voice too. They can also use more radios at each AP to handle both backhaul and user links.
