Is Your VoIP Number Portable?

February 02, 2007Is Your VoIP Number Portable?

Ok, so you’ve decided to switch VoIP providers to cut back on costs and hopefully get access to better service. One thing you’re certainly not going to get in the course of the change is your old phone number. The sad truth is that VoIP providers do not allow number portability, which means you have to call everyone on your contact list and inform them of the change.

Believe it or not, VoIP providers incur maintenance costs on your number because they lease it from a telecom provider. Now you know why they are reluctant to part with it! They certainly wouldn’t want to continue incurring costs for your number when you’ve decided not to use their services anymore.

Some providers allow you to keep your number if you commit to either a one-time fee or a monthly rate that you have to continue paying as long as you retain your number. Others allow you to keep your old number permanently in the virtual form; calls dialed to this number are forwarded to your actual number, at a certain cost of course.
